The Challenge - The Pollard Family

Before discovering Career Prep High School, the Pollard family faced big challenges in the traditional public school system. Ms. Pollard's oldest son, DJ, struggled with his grades and with making friends. Plus, he wasn’t getting the one-on-one help with his homework that he needed. This lack of tailored help left him frequently feeling disengaged, bored, and frustrated. Seeing DJ unhappy deeply concerned his mother.

Ms Pollard's middle child also faced years of conflict with the Columbus City School District regarding his academic, social, and behavioral needs that required more support than other children. He felt that he was constantly being bullied and targeted by his peers because he was so much physically bigger than other students his age.

How Career Prep Helped

When Ms. Pollard brought her sons to Career Prep High School, the transformation began. Our school's commitment to understanding and addressing individual student needs made all the difference. DJ enrolled in our specialized NCCER program (National Center for Construction Education & Research) to pursue a career as an electrician, receiving the guidance and encouragement needed to excel. DJ began to thrive and improve in all areas of his life, after 2 years of continuous improvement at the Capital High School location in Columbus Ohio, she decided to enroll her middle child at Career Prep High School as well.

Our supportive and understanding environment led to a dramatic change: a record free of behavioral issues and a sense of belonging he had not experienced before. She feels that he is finally at a school that understands her child and his unique needs.

The Career Prep Difference

Today, the Pollard family looks to the future with optimism. DJ is set to graduate this spring, equipped not only with his high school diploma but also with professional credentials that pave the way for a successful career.

His brother now thrives in a supportive setting that appreciates his unique needs and strengths. Ms. Pollard reports that she is “counting down the days until her youngest child turns 14 so she can enroll her at Capital High School”.

She feels confident in the knowledge that her children are not just getting an education but are being prepared for life. She is profoundly thankful for the personal and academic growth her children have experienced and credits our school for changing the trajectory of their lives.
